Fire Hose is live!

I received my Playdate a couple of weeks ago, and enjoyed that first phase of just playing the little thing. What a funky character!

But it didn't take long before I had to try creating for it. But what? I spent an afternoon poking at the official SDK before deciding to start smaller. Pulp's tile-based nature makes it less exciting when letting one's imagination run wild as to what could possibly be built with the Playdate. But that restricted scope can be a real blessing when it comes to actually deciding on and building a concept. And I'll be honest: for this first project I really needed a graphical interface to help me get moving. Before long I had adopted the Pulp way of thinking and was really loving the interface.

I didn't want to go too high-concept to start with: The Playdate has a fantastic D-pad so something which involves regular, satisfying movement-and-A-button action seemed exactly like the kind of thing I'd want to actually play myself on this thing. But I needed to give at least some thought to the crank. The hose-winding idea sprang up pretty naturally and that was it: from a conceptual level the game had already made itself.

So this first release is the result of 4 days' worth of exploratory coding. I've called it version 0.1.0 because there are still a few more things that I would like to add in to the game. But this is a small game which isn't going to turn into a big one. I've really enjoyed making it, and I enjoy playing it, and I hope others out there do too!

Oh and as per the game page: apologies if this game concept already exists - I haven't seen all of the games in season 1 yet so there's a possibility that I'm treading on someone else's toes.  I'll post an update if it turns out that's the case.
